Facility
The Huronia Dance Centre is one of Barrie’s most well equipped dance studio facilities. Two studios are complete with sprung floors, mirrors, barres, change room and lounge facilities.

Instructors

The Huronia Dance Centre has a highly qualified and mature staff. The Centre is directed by Carol Gillstrom who holds an honours Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance. She has attained her Associate Diploma in the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, Cecchetti Ballet Branch. Mrs. Gillstrom holds two dance teaching certificates from the Montreal Ballet Educators’ Society. She has performed and choreographed for The Beckett Players (Montreal), Georgian College Music Theatre (Barrie), Heyoka Circle Theatre (Orillia), Mount Royal Ballet Academy (Montreal) and for York University’s dance department. She has studied under professional dancers and choreographers such as Karen Bowes and Grant Strate of the National Ballet of Canada, Norrey Drummond of Toronto Dance Theatre, Sandra Neels of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and Peggy McCann. Mrs. Gillstrom continues her training annually.

Mrs. Gillstrom has been teaching ballet, modern, jazz, creative dance and dance exercise for over twenty eight years. Her employers include Seneca College (Toronto), Georgian College (Barrie and Orillia), as well as her own school in Montreal. She has developed dance programmes for both the Etobicoke and the Barrie YM-YWCA’s, as well as giving workshops, lectures and programmes for local organizations. Carol has also co-authored a teaching manual on implementing dance in Elementary School Curriculum with April Balunda.

April Balunda, B.A. Dance, CDTA
Modern, Jazz, Creative, Tap, Teacher training

Ms. Balunda has been teaching dance for over 20 years. She holds a

Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance and has been a member of the Canadian

Dance Teachers Association for more than 10 years. Having choreographed

for community theatre groups, opera companies and special events, April is an inspired teacher and choreographer. Along with teaching dance programmes at many local elementary & high schools, April co-authored a teaching manual on implementing dance into the elementary and high school curriculum.

On staff since HDC`s inception, April shares the discipline and joy of dance to all her students.

 

Lucien (Lou) Senneville
Standard dances - Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep & Viennese Waltz

Lucien (Lou) Senneville is an Associate member of the Canadian Dance Teacher Association and a Licentiate/Full Member of the International Dance Teacher Association. He is currently training for his Fellowship with IDTA.

Lou has been teaching Ballroom dancing since 1985. His has trained in Montreal, Germany and Toronto. He is also passionate about choreographing numbers for musicals, shows and demonstrations.

He presently teaches for the City of Barrie Recreational Program, Base Borden and the Huronia Dance Centre, and organizes general practices for his students.

His curriculum includes Social and International Styles: Latin dances - Rumba, Cha-Cha, Jive, Samba and Salsa.

Sandra La Plante

Since 1981, Sandra has been teaching fitness classes and tailoring fitness regiments for both men and women. She maintains her dance training in Tap, Jazz and Ballet, here at Huronia Dance Centre. A dancer since the age of 5, Sandra has choreographed for South Simcoe Theatre and the Penetang – Midland Hurons gymnastic team. Sandra makes the connection between the dance and the fitness worlds by enthusiastically leading her students to discover the symbiotic relationship between fitness and dance.

 

Elizabeth Mavor, CDTA Full Member – Stage
Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Choreography, Company

Ms. Mavor is a Full Member of the Canadian Dance Teachers Association. She has been training in reputable schools in Barrie and Collingwood for over 21 years. Presently an advanced student and company assistant. Liz has passed her CDTA Advanced Jazz Exam and her Advanced 1 Cecchetti Ballet Exam and CDTA Elementary Tap. Liz has taught and assisted ballet classes from primary through elementary levels for 10 years. Elizabeth participates in teacher training workshops in both ballet and jazz and is training for her Associate Cecchetti exam.

 

Alison Wideman, BFA Dance, CDTA Associate (Jazz Gr. 1-3)
Creative, Modern, Jazz Choreography and Company

 

A graduate of the York University Dance Department, Alison joins us again this year to teach and choreograph for our Company. Alison is an Associate Member of the Canadian Dance Teachers Association and is training for her Full Membership. An expert choreographer and caring, friendly teacher, we look forward to another great year with Alison.

 


Leslie Rabinovitch
Leslie Leslie has been a long time member of the Huronia Dance Centre taking various types of dance for the past 12 years. She has been a part of our company for four years and played many lead roles in our shows. Leslie has taken dance at school and continues to do so. Leslie has passed her Intermediate Cecchetti Ballet Exam and her CDTA Elementary Jazz Exam and is now working towards her Advanced 1 Cecchetti Ballet. She has also had numerous years of musical training in piano and voice and musical theatre. Leslie has been a dance assistant for five years at Huronia and is looking forward to continuing her training in instructing dance.
