Huronia Dance Centre Recital and Benefit Gala

Tuesday, June 15 at Gryphon Theatre at Georgian College, Huronia Dance Centre will stage its 5th Annual Benefit Gala to raise funds for a worthy local charity!

Thanks to your generosity and support, HDC has donated over $4500 to local charities such as Simcoe Community Services (2005) and Alzheimer Society of Greater Simcoe County (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008)

Saturday, May 8 at Gryphon Theatre at Georgian College, Huronia Dance Centre will stage its 23nd Recital featuring dancers from the Huronia Dance Theatre Company and all the dancers Huronia Dance Centre (*)

Creative Dance for Youngsters

Creative dance is a wonderful way for your child to exercise body and mind while improving coordination, posture, strength, flexibility and musicality. It is a dance experience developed for boys and girls where enjoyment is stressed! Children will explore their bodies’ movement capabilities through movement songs and rhymes. Stories, props, and nature themes will serve as stimuli for creative dances. Warm-up exercises provide a lead-up to modern and ballet technique. (Age as of Sept. 2009)

HIP HOP Boys ONLY
Enjoy the challenge of fast-paced classes designed for Boys only. The skills and attributes that dance develops e.g. co-ordination, strength, flexibility, body and rhythm awareness and development of self esteem, are important to nurture in every individual. Dance skills: both physical and personal are common to every physical sport. Self expression through dance is as valuable as self expression though other artistic mediums. Besides all girls are impressed by a guys who knows how to bust a groove! Boys aged 8-11 will partake in high energy hip hop classes featuring moves from the latest urban music videos and the most intense aerobic work out!

Modern & Creative Dance

Through movement exploration and analysis using modern based techniques, boys and girls will explore the bodies’ expressive capacities. Pre-Ballet + Pre-Primary Ballet

An enjoyable dance class for children; preferably taken with one year creative movement. Children will improve coordination, flexibility and strength while discovering, in an enjoyable way, correct posture, placement and flow of movement. Choreographed dances will incorporate mime, character work, creative movement and ballet technique.

Cecchetti Ballet Technique

A ballet class based on Cecchetti ballet syllabus; consisting of barre and centre work. Correct posture, alignment and placement is stressed, preparing the dancer’s body for the precise steps and movements of port de bras, adage, tours, petit and grand allegro, batteries and pointe work.

To develop dancers’ creative expression through movement, one class every four weeks will be devoted to creative and /or character dance.

Tap for Youth

As well as improving coordination and rhythm awareness, tap dancing for youth will emphasize enjoyment and performance. Children will be taught the basic steps of tap which will be incorporated into tap routines. Creative movement sessions will also be included in the children’s programme. Tap shoes are required.

Posture, alignment, placement and coordination are stressed. Careful attention is given to a variety of styles, i.e. hip hop, funk, lyrical, Latin and Broadway. Social Ballroom Dancing
Dance Like the Stars! Would you rather be a participant on the dance floor? Has it been a while since you did any Latin, or Waltz or Foxtrot in the Standard dance group. Perhaps you would like to take advanced levels. What ever you choose, the atmosphere in our group lessons has the emphasis on learning and having fun. So join us with your partner! The syllabus includes: Cha Cha, Mambo, Rhumba, Jive (Swing), Slow Waltz, Foxtrot, and the Quick-Step. Limited enrollment: 8 couples maximum/studio. Dress casual. We suggest shoes with leather or neoprene soles – no open toes.

NEW Ballroom Performance Group

If you are interested in performing in the year-end gala, June 15, 2010, please talk to your instructor, Lou Senneville. There will be 5 extra weeks of rehearsals. Cost TBA depending on whether it is a duet or group ballroom dance.

Huronia Dance Theatre Company

The Huronia Dance Centre has a wonderful corps of talented dancers who take lead roles in the year end production. They also perform by request at many local venues.

We are very proud of our Company members and wish to help them develop their technical and performance skills. In order to maintain a high caliber of performer, Company members must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Candidates must be at least 10 years old with a great amount of enthusiasm and a true sense of commitment.
  • They must have taken the exam programs or equivalent in 2008/ 2009. If from a different dance school, please write a letter requesting permission to audition outlining past experience and exams passed.
  • Candidates must have taken at least four years of dance and an exam or exam program in dance.
  • They must audition FRIDAY, September 11, 2009. They should prepare a solo dance (2 minute max.). (Audition fee is $30.00 non-refundable)
  • Successful auditionees must take ballet and jazz
  • They must also take a ballet, tap or jazz exam program plus a choice of modern or tap classes.
  • Members must purchase specific dancewear.

Mandatory Company Rehearsals take place Fridays 6:15 to 9:15pm

N.B. In order to be eligible for the company audition for the 2010-2011 season you must take an exam this year (2009/10). Therefore, you must take an exam the year prior to the year you want to audition.

Exams - Cecchetti Ballet, CDTA Jazz & Tap

We at Huronia Dance Centre feel that each dancer learns differently and has different expectations and reasons for dancing. We care for each of our dancers and wish to bring out the best in him/her. We wish to provide every dancer with a challenge, without submitting to unnecessary stress.

Dance exams are a learning option for certain dancers. During an exam, the proficiency of a dancer may be accurately described only if the dancer is physically, technically and psychologically prepared. We would be pleased to recommend which learning approach is best for you and your child. For those who wish to attain a grade and ballet certificate form THE IMPERIAL SOCIETY OF TEACHERS OF DANCE (Cecchetti Society Branch) or a grade and jazz or tap certificate form THE CANADIAN DANCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION, (two very well respected dance organizations) Huronia Dance Centre may prepare you for dance examinations. Whether exams are pursued or not, be assured that HURONIA DANCE CENTRE will live up to its mandate and reputation: providing effective and enjoyable dance instruction for all at a reasonable cost!!!

Cecchetti Ballet & CDTA Jazz & Tap

In order to be considered for exams, candidates must:

• Obtain teacher’s permission
• Partake in 1-2 exam workshops on Sundays in Toronto or surrounding area
($15-$35 each)
• Take 2 classes in the exam discipline/week
• Candidates must wear specific dance attire.
• Attendance to every coaching class is compulsory.

Exam fee approx. $20-$80 per exam. Major ballet exams $100-$200.

Examiner expenses: for food/accommodations/travel divided by the number of candidates.

Pianist Fee: (ballet only) approx. $20-$30./hr. divided among ballet candidates.

Ballet exams will take place in Nov 2009 or June 2010 ONLY. Ballet exam candidates must take at least 2 classes per week during regular season and must take an intensive coaching program prior to the exam.

The Ballet Coaching Program will cost approximately $400.00, plus cost of the exam, pianist, and accommodation fee. Semi Private $40.00/hr. Private $60.00/hr.

Jazz & Tap Exam program

Jazz and Tap exams should be taken in order. Exam candidates must take a regular weekly class in the same discipline as the exam, plus a one hour exam class for at least 16 weeks depending on dancers’ readiness.

Exam classes cost $490.00 for 16 weeks. plus cost of the exam, and accommodation fee.

Private lessons are $60.00 per hour and Semi Private $40.00 per hour

Dance Assitant Training Workshop

At the beginning of the year, those students who would like to be dance demonstrators or assistants must register for the Dance Assistant Training Seminar. Every year the subject matter is revised to ensure that our dance assistants are building their teaching skills to the next level. Learn how to be an effective assistant in the class!

- Desire to be a dance class helper
- 5-6 years of dance training
- Director’s permission
- Available to assist 4-9pm weekdays and/or Sat 9am – 4:30pm
